اقْرَأْ

The Dome of the Rock spreads on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, on the site of long-gone Jewish Temples. Inscribed on the façade in Arabic is ‘Do Not Say Three.’ This is the Muslim condemnation of the Trinity. It began as a testimony of a Christian priest.

The Trinity schism included the excommunication of the Ebionite church that inhabited western Arabia. They held to traditional Jewish beliefs with an understanding that Jesus was the Messiah, but not divine.[1] In the early 7th Century Waraka ibn Nawfal was an Ebionite priest[2] in Mecca. Waraka was said to have used the book of Matthew in Arabic and could also read and write in Hebrew for the Torah. He had a student named Muhammad.

In 595 Muhammad, age 25, married his wealthy employer Khadija, age about 40.[3] She was a first cousin to Waraka. There in Mecca Muhammad became familiar with the teachings of Moses and Jesus. After many years with this knowledge he became more searching and disturbed by local idolatry. He began to make retreats to a cave outside Mecca, there fasting and meditating.

In 610 it happened. The Angel Gabriel appeared to him and said, “اقْرَأْ”.[4] Iqrah! Read! And Gabriel repeated: Read! As Muhammad discovered he was to read the Torah and Gospels,[5] but he could not read or write. When he reported this to Waraka the priest declared Muhammad a prophet.

In 613 Muhammad shared his vision with the Quraish tribe of Mecca.[6] His original message was faith in one God, brotherhood, and the Last Judgment. And get rid of all those pagan idols that support your lifestyle. Then times quickly turned tough. But his calling was confirmed in 620 with the Night Journey from the Temple Mount to Heaven to meet God.[7]

In 622 Muhammad fled to Medina, known as the Hijra. This is marked by the beginning of the Muslim calendar with its lunar months.[8] Muhammad’s message shifted to a directive on social life and showing strength. He passed on in 632 and was buried in Medina. Islam began to flourish with the scimitar from the humble beginnings of a wayward Christian who was told to Read the Torah and Gospels.

The Quran was assembled several decades after Muhammad’s death, “from parchments, scapula, leafstalks of date palms and from the memories of men.”[9] It is arranged out of chronological sequence and context, with some later passages seeming to conflict with the earlier.[10] Again, we need religious lawyers to make sense, but they mostly divide between the Shia and Sunni,[11] and they divide within between brotherhood and kill the infidel.

The Quran has many Godly teachings brought in from the Torah and Gospels, but it has been overwhelmed by the later writings of other ‘memories of men,’ the books of the hadith. In the original version of the Hamas Charter, Article 7 quotes an hadith: The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: O Muslim! there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him![12] Rockets and fire balloons were recently crossing from Gaza into Israel.

When we shift from the Trinity to the Muslim understanding of Jesus, what does the Quran say? “The Angels said, O Mary, God gives you good news of a Word from Him. His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, well-esteemed in this world and the next, and one of the nearest.[13] And, “The Messiah son of Mary was only a messenger, before whom other Messengers had passed away, and his mother was a woman of truth.[14] Jesus is consistently called the Messiah and a prophet of God. But regarding denial of His deity and the Trinity Muhammad said, “So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, ‘Three.’”[15]

The Quran lawyers deny that Jesus was even the Son of God. When Gabriel announced to Mary she was with child, “She said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a child, when no man has touched me?’ He said, ‘It will be so. God creates whatever He wills. To have anything done, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.[16] These interpreters didn’t know about dinosaurs or DNA. When God said ‘Be’ He created the male DNA that would complete Jesus. The Torah says, “God created mankind in his own image.”[17] As Adam was the son of God, so was Jesus the Son of God.

And the Son of God died for our sins? No, cry the Imams, Jesus was not crucified. Read, “And for their saying, ‘We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of God.’ In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did. Indeed, those who differ about him are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of assumptions. Certainly, they did not kill him. Rather, God raised him up to Himself. God is Mighty and Wise.[18]

If the Quran lawyers had done what Muhammed had been instructed to do, read the Gospels, they would have realized there was something amiss. It was Jesus who was crucified and died on the Cross, as witnessed by his mother Mary and confirmed by the apostle John next to her.[19] They should have considered whose ‘saying’ was being reported. And, perhaps, noted that Jesus is now in Heaven with God while Muhammad is dust in the grave.

Context? These passages are preceded by a condemnation of the unbelieving Jews who killed the prophets, slandered Mary, and sent Jesus to the Cross. But here these Jews supposedly call Jesus the Messiah and the Messenger of God. Jews would never say these words. Christians would not deny the death of Jesus on the Cross. If these words were not spoken by a Jew or Christian, who said them? The words are from the ‘memories of men’ who ‘have no knowledge of it.’

No, no, cried the Imam. The Quran was written before the Creation and delivered in perfect order as written today. The more I believe it the greater my faith, even if this passage is contradictory. And that tree is calling that a Jew hides behind it that requires killing. You are a curse.

No, no, cried the Preacher. My Bible is more inerrant than your Quran. I have more faith. I say, ‘Three.’ You are anathema.

No, no, cried the Cohen. Moses met directly with God in the Tabernacle. His words are immutable. You are an abomination.

Yes, yes, cried Satan. The Blame Game. I’m right, and you are wrong. I’m good, and you are evil. And Dogma Dog echoed a long howl.

Perhaps if Muslims would heed the first words in the Quran and do what Allah instructed Muhammad to do – READ – they would not be checking behind the rocks and trees. Yes, yes, read the Torah and Gospels. They were finalized in the Hebrew and Greek before Muhammad was born. Waraka’s sixth-century Arabic translation of Matthew would be essentially identical as today.

Islam has the essence of who Jesus is but with a few twists. Yes, he was the son of Mary, a Prophet, and the Messiah. Their understanding needs to be upgraded to recognize that He was/is the Son of God and that He did die on the Cross. Don’t say Three. What needs to seep in is awareness of God’s grace and presence of His Holy Spirit.

Another issue for the Imam and Cohen is their rules. The Pharisees had 613 Commandments with dos and don’ts to stay in Yahweh’s favor, and the Orthodox Jew today is working the list to take us back three millennia. Islam has outdone the Cohanim with Shariah Law and Allah’s supposed necessities to take us back only to the 7th Century. Lose the laws with Jesus and live in God’s grace today.

Jesus the Messiah died on the Cross for the forgiveness of your sins. Accept Jesus as Lord and confirm this in your heart. Fellowship later with the Thief from the Cross in Paradise.
